A fine cup of tea lends itself to reflection and relaxation. At Shaharazade's we have carefully researched and gathered a collection of the rarest and finest quality teas available. The following is a brief description of most of the special teas and tisanes that we provide. Some of our teas are exceptionally rare and are therefore more costly. They have been marked by an asterisk. Please see the “TEA MENU” section of the menu for pricing.

BLACK TEAS: BLENDED

To maintain the flavor, aroma, and character of a tea over a longer periods of time, teas of different crops, estates, or even origins are blended. It is thereby possible to combine the positive characteristics of different teas. A well-balanced blend, for instance, can have much of the strength and cup color of an Assam, the freshness and persistence of a Ceylon, and the flowery notes of a Darjeeling.

Shaharazade's Special Blend: This is our one-of-a-kind blend of high grade China Blacks lightly scented to yield a rich, mellow taste with a hind of fruit in the background. We often use it as an ingredient in our daily iced tea offering.

Irish Breakfast: Our heartiest tea. A rich blend of Assams, Nilgiri, and China Blacks.

English Breakfast: An aromatic blend of high-grown Ceylon with fine Assam and Nilgiri tea.

East Friesian: A strong and full-bodied blend of tippy Assams, Sumatra, and Java teas. A great morning tea best with milk and sugar.

Fine Earl Grey: A classic blend of China black teas with the unique touch of bergamot.

Lapsang Souchong: An assertive, smoky flavor makes this the most distinctive of all teas. Rich and dark red in color. Not for everyone but revered by the few.

Smoky Russian Caravan: A milder blend of China blacks and Lapsang Souchong.

Smoky Russian: A top-quality blend of China Blacks and Lapsang Souchong.

Decaffeinated English Breakfast and

Decaffeinated Earl Grey: Full-leaf blends decaffeinated by the natural CO 2 high pressure method.

BLACK TEAS: REGIONAL/ESTATE

Like single malt Scotches ar varietal wines, these teas are full of their regional character and prized by those who have come to know and appreciate their unique qualities.

Assam (Tarajulie): Rich in tippy leaves with a malty-fruit aroma. A hint of milk added to this medium-bodied tea brings out a delicate sweetness.

Ceylon (Nuwara Eliya): A delicate and aromatic high-grown tea. Sweet with lemony notes. Makes an excellent iced tea.

Darjeeling (second flush): A blend of complementary teas from the region. Light, with muscatel notes

Keemun Imperial: An excellent, refined and aromatic tea. A soft, rich-tasting cup often called the “Burgundy of teas” for its superb bouquet.

Yunnan FBOP: Fine broken Orange Pekoe, full-bodied, fruity-spicy. A satisfying breakfast tea that goes well with milk and sugar.

Decaffeinated Assam: CO 2 process .

BLACK TEAS: FLAVORED

Flavored teas, enjoyed hot or chilled, offer delicious taste extensions to the world of tea. Our flavored teas are made by adding natural flavors, fruits, and flowers to high quality teas.

Mango w/Mango Pieces and Sunflower Petals and

Ginger Peach w/ Pieces and Flowers and

Peach Apricot: These are three of the most excellent pairings of natural flavors with black teas. All are excellent hot or iced.

Masala Chai: A rich, fragrant blend of black tea with many spices. The finish has cardamom notes peeking out from lively ginger. Served in the traditional way with milk and sugar in the pot.

Persian Black w/ cardamom: A subtle hint of cardamom paired with China black tea that is very popular in the Middle East. Best with just a hint of sugar. Makes a good iced tea.

GREEN TEAS: THE WHITES (Fujian Province, China)

The most delicate of all teas, the production of white tea consists of only two steps: steaming and drying. The absence of withering, rolling, and oxidation leaves the appearance of the tea essentially unaltered. Prized equally for their subtlety of taste and for their now well-documented health-giving properties.

Yin Zhen (Silver Needle): Single buds of equal length covered with white down. Infuses to a pale yellow liquor with an extraordinary fresh sweet fragrance. Considered the most delicate of all teas, with unmatched subtlety. Our rarest and most expensive tea.

Pai Mu Tan (White Peony): Mde from the same bushes as Silver Needle, with a similar natural sweetness, but darker in color with a bolder aroma. This tea is a house favorite.

Casablanca Melon: An exotic, luxurious blend of white tea and sweet melon Delicious hot or iced.

GREEN TEAS: CHINA and JAPAN

Tea, first discovered in China approximately 5,000 years ago, has had a major impact on the histories of China and Japan. It continues to hold an important position in the daily life of these two countries. Consumed throughout the day, tea is enjoyed as a social beverage, appreciated as a source of health-giving nutrients, and offered to guests as a sign of respect. Nearly all tea drunk in China and Japan is green tea.

Temple of Heaven: A highest grade “gunpowder” tea (rolled into small pellets) with a light, complex taste.

Lung Ching (Dragon's Well): A connoisseur's version with all oof the sought after chestnut flavor. Rich in vitamin C. Good chilled.

Sencha: Elegant, flat, dark green leaves yielding a fragrant cup. Vitalizing, smooth aftertaste.

Gyokuro Superior: One of our most costly teas, it consists of only the tender leaf tips. A very distinct, lavorful cup with a fresh, flowery aroma. Mild and very low in tannins. One of the most sought after teas in the worl.

Tongyu Mt. Green: Exceptional quality tea, hand-picked, and traditionally fired in bamboo baskets. Beautiful long leaves with silver tips. A slightly fruity taste with a light, natural sweetness.

GREEN TEAS: FLAVORED

The smooth, subtle taste of green tea makes it a great ckompanion to other flavors and scents. Many of these teas are coveted around the world and awaken wonderful memories with their unforgettable fragrance and satisfying taste.

Jasmine Dragon Tears: Delicate Pouchong tea and deep scented night blooming jasmine petals rolled into small balls yield a velvety liquor that is subtle yet deeply satisfying. A simply exceptional tea experience.

Jasmine with Flowers: A tea with surprising body and a captivating floral character accentuated by specially selected May Jasmine blossoms.

Genmaicha: Made with hulled rice kernels and popped corn this tea has a light, golden liquor with a uniquetoasty, nutty flavor that is naturally sweet. A savory tea that creates conversation.

Kyoto Cherry Rose: A very popular tea. A high quality green tea blended with the flavor of sweet cherry and the scent of morning rose. A tea to remember and to share with friends.

Sweet Lemon: Sencha green tea with lemon peels and lemongrass gives this tea a captivating bouquet and a refreshing taste.

Moroccan Mint: Ours is made of fine China gunpowder tea flavored with the highest quality spearmint. Refreshing both hot and chilled. Served sweet in the traditional way.

OOLONG TEAS (CHINA and FORMOSA)

Also known as partially oxidized or semi-fermented teas, Oolongs have some of the qualities of both black and green teas. At their best Oolongs are beautiful, full-bodied teas with a fragrant flavor and fruity, sweet aroma. The vas majority of Oolongs come from China and Formosa (Taiwan), where the finest varieties are still handmade following the traditional production process.

Tung Ting Jade: An organically grown tea with a pale amber color. It has a sweet, distinctive aroma and a beautiful color in the glass.

Formosa Finest: Another organically grown tea, this has a pale amber color. Fragrant, smooth, with a fruity-sweet flavor.

Ti Kuan Yin: From China, this Oolong has a refined, complex aroma and a rich flavor. Entirely handmade. Try iced.

Orange and Peach Blossom: Two excellent Formosa Oolong and fruit blends. Good any time of the day and great accompaniments to light snacks. Used often as our iced tea of the day

Formosa Pouchong: This has quickly become a house favorite. Only 12% oxidized-- it has the fruitiness and aroma of a fine Oolong with the fresh character of a fine green tea

Pu-erh: A Yunnan province based large leaf variety praised for centuries in China for its excellent medicinal properties. These are rare, aged teas, low in acidity and gentle on the stomach. hey have an earthy, elemental character. Current studies seem to underline their effectiveness in lowering cholesterol and reducing body weight.

TISANES: FRUIT or HERBAL BEVERAGE

Popular in Europe and elsewhere for many years, fruit and herbal blends consist of delicious and healthful natural fruits and herbs, unadorned or in balanced compositions. Since they do not contain actual tea (Camellia Sinensis) they are almost all caffeine-free and present a healthy alternative to regular tea and iced tea and commercial fruit drinks.

Organic Raspberry: Flavored fruit melange headed by raspberry-- with hibiscus blossoms, apple bits, and rose hips.

Organic Elderberry: Elderberries, bourbon vanilla, hibiscus, rose hips, and apple bits.

Egyptian Chamomile: The finest Egyptian variety consisting of only the flower heads. Produces a deep golden infusion with a pronounced flavor.

Peppermint: Straight peppermint-- the highest quality cut-leaf.

Roasted Rooibos: Sometimes called “Red Bush Tea” rooibos is a caffeine-free beverage from South Africa with a mild, aromatic taste. Low in tannins it does not turn bitter over time like some teas. A satisfying drink, very high in antioxidants. It now has a large following among the health-conscious.

Provence Rooibos: Very flavorful with a floral and fruity bouquet. Lavender notes. Very popular.

Vanilla Rooibos: Fruity with sweet notes. Vanilla gives the rooibos a wonderful exotic jazzy depth.

Try with milk and sugar.

Sweet Lemon Rooibos: Green rooibos gently flavored with lemon. A light, fruity character that also makes a great iced tea.

Yerba Mate: A caffeinated traditional South American beverage. Enjoyed as a revitalizing and stimulating social drink wherever people meet. A natural hunger and thirst suppressor.
